Fakher Mergasori
Fakher Mergasori was a Kurdish leader that fought for freedom and democracy for the Kurdish people during the 1950’s, 1960’s and early 1970’s. He was born in 1937 in the village of Mergasor which is located in the north east part of Iraqi Kurdistan. In the end of the 1950's he was politically active. Most of the time was spent working underground in order to escape from persecution.
During the 1960's he joined the newly started Kurdish opposition movement. He was a well-liked and a brave leader and was a regional party-leader in Suleimania. Fakher Mergasori was murdered in 1975 by his opponents because of his political views and popularity.
The Fakher Mergasori schools were all founded to honor his memory, and his dreams of freedom and democracy for the people of Kurdistan.
